Falling asleep can be elusive on occasion.

Natural sleep aids are great alternatives to any OTC sleeping products. Using herbs and spices can have very effective results.

Try using nutmeg as a natural sleep aid next time you can’t sleep.

 

Nutmeg makes a warm and cozy bedtime beverage that is quite lovely. Make it with warm milk, honey and ground nutmeg. (Plant or animal milk works, use what you prefer.) Nutmeg encourages a comforting sleep and the warm milk envelopes you in warming coziness that allows you to fall asleep easily.

We know nutmeg as being sprinkled over the top of holiday eggnog and that might be about it. However, nutmeg is a spice we should be aware of for many qualities. Add a pinch or two to tomato sauce to add a complex sweetness. Add crushed bits of nutmeg to your pepper mill for a great depth of flavor.

Personally I love the aroma and flavor of fresh nutmeg. Use a nutmeg grater or in the absence of a nutmeg grater use the smallest side of a box grater or a fine microplane to grate the fresh nut.

In the photo, do you see the red surrounding the nutmeg nut? That  is  called mace and it is stronger in flavor than the nut. It is also more expensive. If you don’t have nutmeg but you do have mace, use it. If you need mace and have nutmeg, use nutmeg, just a bit more to make up for the stronger flavor of the mace.

Here’s how to make this cozy bedtime beverage:

  • Warm a cup of milk
    • For added luxury, steam the milk with a cappuccino steamer for lots of froth on top
  • Add a spoonful of honey
  • Grate a teaspoon of fresh nutmeg over the top

Sit back and sip, you’ll be yawning and heading for bed before you can finish the cup.

A nice benefit of nutmeg is that it also encourages sweet dreams and reduces stress.
